Freedom Dies in a Cage
Freedom Dies in a Cage (in Persian)

Pari Mansouri‘s Freedom Dies in a Cage (in Persian) is a beautifully crafted collection of five short stories in Persian, that delves deep into the complexities of human emotions and the subtle lessons of life, all through the lens of children’s experiences.

The stories, filled with vivid imagery and profound symbolism, explore themes such as freedom, imagination, and the consequences of power, all while remaining accessible to young readers. Pari’s lyrical prose brings to life the inner worlds of her characters, capturing the innocence, curiosity, and sometimes, the fears that define childhood. Each story is not just a narrative but a thoughtful meditation on life’s deeper truths, making the collection both engaging and thought-provoking.

A summary of the stories are outlined below:

  1. Freedom Dies in a Cage,
In Freedom Dies in a Cage, a young boy named Kaveh, eager to own a white rabbit, is taken to the zoo by his father. There, his father encourages him to imagine the animals in their natural habitats and to consider what it means to live in captivity. As Kaveh follows his father’s advice, he experiences a vivid and terrifying vision where animals, having gained intelligence and power, imprison humans in cages. This unsettling realisation leads Kaveh to a deeper understanding of freedom, power, and the complex emotions tied to the concept of captivity.
  2. Sweet Quarrel
Sweet Quarrel tells the story of Nasrin, a young girl who loves her parents deeply but is troubled by their constant arguments. Determined to prove to her mother that her father truly loves her, Nasrin devises a clever plan to make her mother hide and listen to her father’s reaction when he believes she has left for good. The plan reveals the depth of her father’s love, bringing the family closer together and demonstrating the innocence and wisdom that children can bring to adult relationships.
  3. Father’s Absence (Read the story in English)
Father’s Absence follows a young boy named Farhad, who, in third grade, starts to form a deep connection with his father. He cherishes the moments they spend together, feeling a mix of joy and nervousness in his father’s presence. When his father has to leave for a two-week trip to Isfahan, Farhad struggles with the separation. He tries to be strong for his mother and sister but feels overwhelmed by his father’s absence. Throughout the story, Farhad learns about the pain of missing someone he loves deeply and the importance of being prepared for life’s challenges..
  4. Needle and Awl
In Needle and Awl, a group of boys discusses the meaning of a Persian proverb that advises one to experience a small pain themselves before inflicting a greater pain on others. This discussion leads to the story of Farhad, a mischievous boy whose mother initially indulges his bad behavior until it spirals out of control. The turning point comes when Farhad’s actions finally impact his own family, teaching him—and the readers—a powerful lesson about empathy, consequences, and the importance of considering others’ feelings.
  5. Lazy Ali with a Foul Mouth
Lazy Ali with a Foul Mouth centers on Ali, a boy known for his laziness and rude behavior. His bad habits cause him to be disliked by everyone around him, including his own mother. One day, Ali wakes up to find himself alone at home, sparking a journey of self-reflection and fear that leads him to realise the consequences of his behavior. The story culminates in Ali’s promise to change, highlighting the potential for growth and redemption even in the most stubborn individuals.

What makes this collection exceptional is Pari’s ability to weave moral lessons into the fabric of her stories without ever sounding didactic. The characters are relatable, their struggles and triumphs resonating with readers of all ages. Whether it’s the terrifying realisation of what true freedom means in “Freedom Dies in a Cage” or the tender exploration of familial bonds in “Sweet Quarrel,” Pari’s stories invite readers to reflect on their own lives and the world around them. This book is not just a collection of children’s stories; it’s a celebration of imagination, a call for introspection, and a reminder of the power of storytelling to illuminate the human condition.
