Introduction

The Iranian poet and writer Mahmud Kianush found inspiration for his works in the natural world from an early age.

Kianush’s multifaceted artistic journey took a fascinating turn in his late seventies with the creation of a new form of art he named “Akkaashi” (Photo Art). In the Persian language, the word “Akkaasi” means photography and the word “Naghghaashi” means painting. Therefore, Kianush’s unique works of art are aptly named.

This unique blend of photography and digital transformation reflects his enduring passion for nature and innovation.

Kianush’s own words on the birth of Akkaashi

I was amazed when I found out that there are many beautiful artworks hidden in the barks of trees, waiting for me to discover them…  Another somewhat funny thing about my art of photo-painting is the Persian name I have made up for this peculiar art. Since of the two stages of the artistic creation, the first is “photography”, in Persian “akkaassi”, and the second, the more creative stage, is “painting”, in Persian “naghghaashi”, then the child of the marriage between these two arts, can be called “akkaashi”, that is “photopainting”.

The Essence of Akkaashi

Kianush’s Akkaashi embodies his deep-seated love for nature and his innovative spirit, creating a unique bridge between the natural world and digital artistry. This distinctive art form involves the careful digital manipulation of his original nature photographs, transforming them into abstract, surrealistic, and symbolic compositions. Each piece maintains an essence of its organic origins, preserving the intricate details and inherent beauty of the natural subjects while infusing them with a new, imaginative life. The result is a collection of works that transcend traditional boundaries, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay between nature and technology.

Through Akkaashi, Kianush not only showcases his technical prowess and artistic vision but also invites viewers to experience the natural world in a profoundly new and thought-provoking way.

Process of Creating Akkaashi

The process of creating Akkaashi is meticulous and deeply personal, reflecting the unique vision and artistic journey of Kianush. It begins with a photograph, often capturing the intricate details of a seemingly ordinary subject like the bark of a tree.

Kianush sees potential in these natural textures, recognising the hidden beauty and stories within. Using a range of digital tools, he embarks on a transformative journey, carefully enhancing the colours to bring out vivid, almost dreamlike hues, and manipulating the textures to add depth and complexity. The forms within the image are reshaped and abstracted, pushing the boundaries of the original subject while still retaining an essence of its natural origins.

This intricate process results in artworks that evoke a spectrum of emotions and provoke thoughtful reflection. The final pieces are a harmonious blend of the familiar and the fantastical, inviting viewers to explore the delicate balance between the tangible world and the surreal realms of imagination.

Each artwork stands as a testament to Kianush’s ability to see beyond the ordinary, creating a bridge between reality and a vibrant, abstract universe.
