Pari Mansouri’s translation of “The Sultan and the Gazelle”, a collection of five children’s short stories from Tanzania and Zululand, is delightful and culturally enriching experience for young Persian readers.
The stories, including “The Sultan and the Gazelle,” “Lizard,” “The Adventurous Girl,” “The Long-Haired Giant,” and “Quagga and Bahiti,” are translated with a focus on maintaining the original tales’ rich cultural heritage while making them accessible and engaging for a new audience.
In her translation of these stories, Pari emphasises the universal themes of these stories, such as bravery, wisdom, and the triumph of good over evil, while also highlighting the unique elements of African folklore that make these tales special. Her attention to detail and sensitivity to cultural nuances ensures that the stories retain their original flavour, with vivid descriptions and lyrical language that draw readers into the magical worlds of these African tales.
