A Poem by Mahmud Kianush from the Book:
“Modern Persian Poetry” ( a book of 129 poems by 43 poets)
1
It is not your eyes
That show me the way,
But a sudden note
From your heart.
2
Only when I touch your hand
Will all the words burst
Like colorful bubbles
In the breeze of your eyes.
3
Laughing, you left my eyes
In search of the sun,
In the dead sea of a mirror;
The sky will never dawn.
4
When you escape loneliness,
Love is glimmering just ahead;
But it is always hate
that embraces you
Before you can say who you are.
5
My journey from the Cave
To the emptiness of the Moon
Has been a long agony;
Let me rest a while
Before I set off for Hell.
6
Every spring the Earth
Throws up all the secrets
entrusted to her;
But I shall break mine to the last one
Before I return to her womb.
7
Only when I walk
By the trees in the sunshine
And hear the call of a bird,
Do I know that life
Is still young and hopeful.
8
Afraid of the deadly snow,
The little bird flew down
To take shelter in the rose bush
Only to burn in a big fire.
9
The universe with all her galaxies
Cannot fill my eyes;
Adorn her with a green leaf,
Then my heart becomes
a green universe.
10
God created the Earth
And left it idle in the void;
I looked at it with love:
Its beauty shone
And I called it World.
11
Before you fall down
Look around
Into the eyes of those
who are near you,
And tell them you were also there;
Your voice will not be forgotten.
12
He smiled in his agony
And pointing to the earth,
He whispered to his grieving son,
“Mothers are in love with their wombs,
And their wombs bear death.”
13
A thorn pricked my finger
And in my mouth
The taste of raspberries
Mixed with a salty doubt;
A redbreast flew away.
