He came to bear the burdens

of trees,

trim away heaviness,

thin the crowd of new slips

to call forth the buds,

to reduce a green chaos.

He gave a welcome to the leaves,

inquired after the first name

of each flower,

tipped his hat to the willow,

smiled, content,

pulled on his moustache,

and returned as he'd come

along the garden path.
